Caller agents and IVR systems are 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. Not even close.
Here's what an IVR does:
Press 1 for billing.
Press 2 for support.
Please hold.
Here's what a caller agent does:
It picks up the phone. Listens to whatever you say. Understands context. Asks follow-up questions. Handles objections. Adapts mid-conversation. And actually gets things done.
𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜.

The confusion makes sense though.
Both live on a phone call.
Both are automated.
But that's where the similarity ends.
IVR was built to route people.
Caller agents are built to replace the entire interaction.
And the reason this is possible now — when it wasn't even 2 years ago — comes down to a few things coming together at once:
🤯 LLMs that can actually hold a coherent conversation
🎙️ Real-time voice infrastructure that keeps latency low enough to feel human (shoutout LiveKit)

An agent that a caller can't always tell isn't human.
